Re: Saturday's Header of Esso Northumbria before launch
Seeing Norman Dunns header photo of Essie Northumbria exsposing her proppeler reminds me some 60 years ago when l was in my late teens serving my time in the joiners shop in hebburn Palmers.Every so often ships would be in the dry dock for re-fits one of them would be what used to call a big end job that would envolve reclining their proppeler shaftThat would in those days using a very hard wood called LIGNUMVITE it was a very hard wood found in the swamps it had oils that was a lubricant for the huge shafts of the ships propeller, our job was to reline the shaft it would e differ cult at times because of other trades wanting to do there respective trades. We us ed to look forward to as we used to call it the big end,any off cuts we took home
For Christmas logs nice little story cheers.
