This lovely view shows Bill Quay to Hebburn riverside with the staiths and Walker Naval Yard across the river. Pelaw Main Staith was given that name because coal from a Colliery of that name near Birtley was brought to Bill Quay riverside by rail. That is why thes staiths had that name. Then in the 1890s when the CWS came to build their factories on empty land between Heworth & Bill Quay and housing for workers started to sprout up,they named this new Town after the Staiths ie Pelaw.
