One man that did more than any other for our area was a Conservative Politician called Sir John Jervis an MP in Surrey. He heard about the plight of our area ie no work, no incomes and people desperate for jobs and it was all thanks to our heroic Jarrow marchers in the 1930s. Sir John decided to help and set up 'The Surrey Fund'. The good people of his area donated over £30,000 to employ workers to create parks etc. Sit John also used some of him own money to purchase two decommissioned Liners to employ men scrapping and recycling the materials/metals.
The 'Swan Hotel' in Alnwick bought enough wood panelling and furniture for their Hotel from the 'Berengaria' Liner. It can be seen today in the Hotel. Then as WW2 approached he set up Jervis Industries employing thousands of workers. He also bought Jarrow Town Hall Clock, still jutting out into Grange Rd today. As a thank you a Park was named after him, ie Jervis Park. Hebburn also had a street named after him
Surely this should have got some voters to switch to his party? but it didnt.
