Re: Plelaw Club Pond
Ken. In the area shown on the google picture, there was a lake / pond. It was large but not of the cultivated variety which may have been elsewhere. The three streets leading to where the former lake was, are identified as WinderMERE, GrassMERE and FellMERE. Mere is an old English word for lake. Access to the lake was though a narrow passageway at the bottom of Grassmere. The locals didn't take kindly to we young scruffs but we were not trespassing. Frogs and frogspawn, newts and blackberries and an occasional accidental dip. all in the lake or Mere as we knew it. Nearby was Heworth cricket club. Now the cemetry.
