The 4 lakes were created by the wealthy Ellison family probably in the 1860s-70s when they had embankments formed in the shape they wanted their lakes to be. At that time our Park was their private garden and the lakes were going to be their ponds. The embankments acted like a dam. Then the little Burn (stream) that came down from Wardley was diverted into the lakes to keep them topped up and the overflow carried on down the little valley (Now filled in) between Cambridge Ave & Windermere Cres, under the Slag heap and on undergound to Pig Sty Avenue and on to the river Don.
