We don't get government funding whatsoever. It's true we get donations legacies etc etc and without that we can't operate. It was part of Margaret Thatcher as plan to axe the Lifeboat but thank god it never happened because the RNLI has saved more lives than we can count since then. It costs thousands of pounds to kit 1 man out. I am involved with the Hartlepool Enterprise branch of the RNLI and on the committee and can say truthfully we work damned hard to earn every penny. It is the most dangerous unpaid work of all rescue services.
There has been a lot of controversy overver how the money is spent and I can't blame folk or criticise them for their opinions but without the brave crews, many lives will continue be lost.
