John, the Keep was built for Henry Ii in 1172. Henry brought a family of silversmiths from Germany called Easterling. They altered the silver content to prevent silversmiths from melting coins. Today we get the term sterling in coinage. By the time Edward II realised the continued theft of silver he brought out the hallmark. The last thing to be assayed in Newcastle was 6 silver teaspoons. That's my excuse for a mis-spent youth!
