Re: Thursdays' Header in Hebburn Colliery
My playground as a kid we lived in the first house in Brancepeth Road, in the fifty's the only building left on the pit heap was the Winding Engine House which is the big building the shaft was capped with some heavy girders with gaps between them we used to lie on them and drop bricks and listen for them hitting the water. Simpsons Hostel wasn't a doss house it's proper name was West Hotel which was on a mosaic at the door it provided a home for a lot of people it had a Indian end a Chinese end for the crews from the ships docked on the river, I watched my first TV program in the television room and had my first curry in the Indian end, it had a shop and a cafe which done really nice chips.
