However, some of us have longer memories of the French:
In April 1982, following the Argentinian invasion of the Falkland Islands, our fleet sailed south. It was realised that the Royal Navy didn't have enough Harriers, so the RAF in Germany was ordered to deploy a squadron, to fly directly, and land onboard the carriers, steaming "somewhere" in the North Atlantic.
The French refused permission to overfly their country, so they had to fly out over & along the English Channel, then south-west across the Bay of Biscay, and hence into the North Atlantic. The were flying on fumes by the time they sighted the fleet, and all landed safely.
Thanks for that..
Subsequently, the Argentinians needed more of the French-built Exocet missiles, that had been so successful against the Atlantic Conveyor & HMS Sheffield. They contacted the French government, and arranged a meeting in Switzerland. A deal was struck, and the missiles were immediately loaded onto trucks at the factory......
What the French didn't realise was that the men at the Swiss meeting were actually MI5 agents! We bought the lot, to prevent their use in the South Atlantic.
