I remember in the early 50 when Martin Kelly used to take bets at William st back lane and Tyne st next to Bella Gardeners every so often the police would take him to Argyle police station for a few minutes then set him free when he would be back on the corner of William and Tyne st back lane.Whe my father had a bet up he would send one of us kids to collect his winning which was very rare l all ways remember his nondplume which was 3 x. Ps l would think John Shearer would remember the bookie ,he lived just over the road in Cuthbert st, happy days
