The Post Office moved to Sunderland Road where the Barberz hairdresser is now, then later as part of the General Dealers in Lingey Gardens, it then moved into the Care Home (Priory Court) on Manor Gardens. It then closed down.
At the moment the nearest Post Office is a tiny little glass box in a off-licence in Fewster Square. This Post Office is all we have for the whole of Wardley and the Leam Lane.
The Wraith family ran what was a shop covering the whole ground floor of the building, with the shop-door in the centre and big windows either side. They lived above the shop and in the bits on each side.
I understand the family had a big falling out when the old father died and a wall was built dividing the shop and the living quarters in two.
One brother, John and his wife Betty, running the Post Office on the left side and the other running a small general dealers on the right.
When John Wraithe retired, his grandson Stephen ran the Post Office until it moved to Lingey Gardens.
Stephen was the author of a Newcastle United Fanzeen, and he was often interviewed on TV as a fan's rep.
He was last spotted acting in an episode of Vera
