It’s for the Hebburn Comprehensive School Phase 11, Sports Block. Location plan.
I hopefully attach 2 photos.
The Wardley Quarry as I think I would know it is the Clay pit close to Gallons Farm or Thistle’s House Farm.
However the very large Clay Pit with the St. John Fisher school on one side and the Monkton Mill Farm ( Cock Crow) on the other.
So the little Clay Pit could be Wardley Quarry which we got to by going up through the fields from the end of Crawley in the early to mid 50’s I think.
Going up there one day there were about 6 or 7 of us and we only got to the start of the second field when I went down with what turned out to be acute Hay Fever.
I was off school for about 2 weeks and mostly lay on our sofa in the lounge with wartime thick curtains on the windows and then suffered every year afterwards. Only in the last 5-10 years has it eased but I can get a hit at anytime in the summer.
So that large quarry when did it start to be dug ? After 1960 ? And I guess it was used by the Pelaw Brickworks.
