That information certainly proves that a bell marked ‘HMS KELLY’ was auctioned by Bonhams and no doubt acquired by the museum. It looks to be in remarkable, dare I say mint, condition. I would still like to know where it had been languishing from 1940 to 2010. That’s 70 years in limbo without a mention of its existence.
You will have to excuse my scepticism but I worked in museums from 1978 to 1998 and witnessed many attempts at pulling wool over unsuspecting eyes. It would not be the first time that auctioneers have been misled but don’t get me wrong… I would seriously love to be proved wrong in my doubts..
The question is ‘Who has been holding this seeming treasure for so long without revealing its existence?’
