Re: Why would anyone come to Australia
I spent a week in Sydney back in November 1967. I was serving in the US Army in Vietnam at the time. Soldiers were offered a week of R&R (rest and relaxation). Australia had just opened up the country to US soldiers. As I had the most time (11 months) in country in my platoon I grabbed the offer of Australia. Many memories of that week. The one that stands out the most though was not enjoyable. After 11 months in country and having to give up your weapon was tough. 2 other soldiers and myself were in the back of a taxi. We were going around a round-about when all of a sudden someone working there let out a burst with a jack hammer. Well, all 3 of us hit the floor of the taxi scaring the heck out of the driver and almost crashing his taxi. After we recovered, he understood when we explained that it had sounded like a machine gun.
