The energy suppliers will attempt to make the installation of a smart meter a condition upon supply and/or restrict your choice of 'deals' if you refuse a smart meter.
It would be interesting if a consumer was 'forced' to have a smart meter or was refused a particular deal and then challenged this under the Consumer Rights Act; no idea if this is plausible but probably worth a try if nothing else but to irritate the energy company and give it some negative publicity.
I always agree to have a smart meter and then change my mind once the deal is done and someone phones me for an appointment. No supplier wants to lose business/money, so in the end, they give up trying to persuade.
