Re: South Shields in 1952 ie 70 years ago
Fowler St ., King St was a bustling shopping area when I left in 1955 it's been turned into a pedestrian mall with more seagulls strutting around than people . The market place was a saving grace on Fri/Sat it been sanitized , coble stones/ricerty wooden stalls gone in the name of health and safety , so have the people , replaced by none slip pavement and plastic style stalls .A third of King St., being demolished in the modernization plan .Granted some of the stores were almost derelict , was it worth saving the facade fronts ? Probably to costly for the amount of retail business , what's left is a ghost town shell of a thriving community . All is not lost , THEY say we have the nicest beach area in the country and excellent fish & chips and it goes without saying some of the nicest people .
