Yes way earlier. There was just Ellison Hall and a small part of the Quay with the pit if I remember. Before the Newtown was formed.

The map of that time was on the board recently.

I doubt the there is any documentation that far back.I assume that most would have been miners.

The Hebburn and Wallsend pits may have linked up underground.
