There is a row of old houses on Elmfield Rd in Hebburn, close to Campbell Park Rd nicknamed 'Sinker's Row' because the workers who sunk Monkton Pit shaft lived there in the early 1900s.
Here is a 1951 aerial view of Monkton Colliery.
I have no idea why it closed but I was among the kids who climbed over the walled off colliery.
A new housing estate stands on that land today.
