Alan, some of your points are valid about shipbuilding and mines but not all.
Shutting them all down and losing complete industries has cost the country, we should not have moved from manufacturing to service economy but maintained both Blair was guilty of this as badly as thatcher in encouraging migrant Labour which kept skills, well paid jobs down.
