First memories are as a really little un' when the old trams ran down it as well as the other traffic.That would be before 1950.
Then it remained the A1 and I used it regularly, in my car, trolley buses and all, until John Dobson St was built in 1970 and the A1 was diverted up it.
I avoid the now A1 western route as it is often a nightmare. When I am up going to Christon Bank I always use the tunnel. So convenient and easy especially with no nonsense finding coins or using a card.
