Richard Grainger, the town builder actually lived for a while at 36 Clayton St. Hos friend was John Clayton was Town Clerk as was his father Nataniel before him. It was John who cleared Grainger of bankruptcy by selling off Graingers assets. Clayton once lived in the Red House buildings so there's an awful lot of history in the street! Strange chap was Grainger! He had 13 children and rebuilt Newcastle at the same time!
