Mind it was not a proper travelling job you found a digs address and got the dig money and chipped in and hired a van an home every night.
At Happy Valley caravan sight Hartlepool at one time there was a dozen caravan on site and over a thousand blokes claiming they were in digs there.
First real job travelling was Highland Fabricators at Nigg Bay, Ross hire in 1979.
Hated it month away then weekend Home.
After loads of travelling jobs and off and on 10 years on the rigs.
Ended up on my last travelling job 2000 to 2003 at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth.
By then 1 month on weekend home became a bind.
Used to stay for 3 months then weekend home.
One time stayed away for 6 months at a time and the wife came down and stayed a week at a time.
Big difference mind you from the rigs.
Onshore you could out for a few pints of beer and some chasers
offshore you could only get a few pints of orangeade.
And loads of the royals out the Tyne Yards ended up stacking shelves in Supermarkets
