The Victorian age had a lot to answer for in the name of progress, the rail companies also wanted to demolish the Castle Keep in Newcastle as it would make it easier to get the line into the Station. They did actually flatten at least one castle so as to build a bridge in the UK. I'll try and recall where it was.
