Re: paper boy"
I remember very well as a paper lad selling delivering papers for dear old Whinnie Gallagher she had a shop along Lyon st the hub of the Quay in those days back in the 1940s 50s as a ten eleven year old l did the rounds either or mostly doing the yards Leslie's Palmers some times top and bottom Reyroldsl would up at 6-30 some times to meet the milk train at Hebburn railway station and do one or two drop offs to other shops, then do my selling at Palmers or Leslie's bottom gate as the day shift came in l then went home had some times some thing to eat a few times then rushed to Glegwell l was late quite a lot stick for being late boss Kellet was not interested he knew why.come 4 o'clock rushed back down the Quay to Whinnies for the papers to sell for the workmen coming out at 4-30 4-45? It was 5 days a week come Saturdays was along day we would start in the after noon with the racing results every half hour on the hour running round the Quay clubs pubs there was no television then so results were released tea time after racing finished.,still on Saturdays while the football season was in full swing after tea about 515-30 we would go up to the station road chronicle shop just next to Shepherd wait for the football chronicle to arrive ( about 3/4 of an hour after final whistle had blown at St James park.l used to do Jutland avenue where l lived then Hedgely road down to Black road back up to the Quay do the pubs pick up the pink paper and finish off patrons leaving the first house at the Gem picture.then pay in at Whinnie Gallaghers finishing off for the day.Next day we had the Sunday papers that was al long day too way into the after noon.
