Re: Can anyone remember!
The marked stones were stored at Sandyford and also in the Manors station area. I have read reports that they were broken into hardcore for roadmaking. The Royal Arcade was a magnificent building but had never been a success in a commercial sense. It was off the main shopping area. The arcade fell prey to those who feel a need to destroy our heritage. These same planners were responsible for walkways in the sky and the leggo men at the Haymarket. Absolute garbage when compared with Grainger and Dobson. Unfortunatly, these same idiots built a tribute to John Dobson. John Dobson Street. Perhaps the ugliest street in Newcastle and an insult to a great man. Change is inevitable but planning has to plan to include and not destroy whatever is considered to be an obstructon. I hope Norman can show more photos of the the beautifull buildings of old Newcastle, Jarrow and South Shields.
