Having spent 30 years diving in the briny I know how seawater rusts things.
That the lighthouse has survived this long being made mainly of metal is remarkable.
I suspect that although the sea may never have flooded the base of the lighthouse ( unless in a storm) the spray of salt laden air would get in the slightest gap or crack.
I think that there has been an inspection failure but as I said before how do you do that.
You would probably have to life the lighthouse off the HD bolts to inspect and replace the them. Not an easy job.
It has to be put back in place as it’s a navigation light and an iconic landmark.
They will probably lift it out of the sea with a big crane( if the Groyne is strong enough) take it to where it can be repaired and the groundwork’s on the Groyne carried out.
A question might be how good is the Groyne structure itself now?
Thank goodness we are now heading into spring and summer so the work can be done.
Keep us posted.
How many times did you play around that lighthouse as a child!
