Re: Newcastle's Barras Bridge 90 years ago
Allan, there was a bridge which crossed Pandon Dene. It was very low down but the bridge was known as Barras Bridge. The site is now occupied by St.Thomas the Martyr Church and the civic centre. Interesting because the original bridge was dark and dangerous so David Stephenson redesigned it so it became a way to link the bridge with the Great North Road. Stephenson also designed the classical all round church now offices but still dominates the Newcastle skyline. Hope this helps Allan.
