For the last 8 years, Jimmy Guy the Verger and I have been doing some private research on St.Pauls as I study pre 1900 church architecture. The building is actually the 2nd church and we discovered a lot. About 30ft below present ground level are structures which we know are connecting with the monastery. The bell tower isn't keyed into the main church which is very odd. Every stone has been dated and recorded as to its origin. However, Anglo-Saxon saxon churches are usually built from stones of Roman fort origin and we can tell by the masons marks and Lewis holes used to carry them. Part of my research sent me looking for the missing stones from the monastery and hey presto I found some in the walls of Jarrow cemetery and the wall of the junction at Tyne Dock. Why I ask?Barry Cramm has also found the graves of his family in 1550.
