Some years ago I heard that it was because of rising damp in a lot of houses due to the lack of a damp proof course or more likely the slates that they used had failed.

At the time of demolition there were no means of installing a damp proof course or was it too expensive?

However does that stack up, No, Ann St and Price St. still there. St. Rollox st plus others.

Surely there was a good reason, brickwork not stable due to old mine workings down the Quay. Those built not long after ? 1852? When Leslie’s started up. Cost of installing services, water, electricity, drainage etc.?p

We shall never know unless someone digs back through the records and there’s no point after all these’s years.
