Sunderland's hand was forced when the all seater stadium rule came in. The best they would have been able to accommodate would have been 22,000. They wanted to build at Washington but complaints from Nissan forced them to look elsewhere, that's why they are at the Stadium of Light.
There's a housing estate on the site of Roker Park today.
