Opposite the Cally pup l always thought it was hit by a bomb l remember Lillian explaining that there was a house no 14 Tyne st next door was a shop,both were demolished for some reason or other leavening a space so us pit Warriors could have the biggest bomb fire on the river.
On the Lyon side of the lane l. Do remember vauguely your mam and dad Norman,next to the Beckett and Martin family.
I would think your parents would have been in the same back lane during the V DAY back lane party in 1945,although l was only 5 years old l will never forget it never seen so much food,there was singing ,dancing etc
Your photo brought back so many memories of a little part of the Quay where l was born where l was christened at st Cuthbert church were l went to the Quay Board school at 5 years old then on to Clegwell,l actulally only lived in the Quay till l was 12 years old but my life till l was 21 was always a part of the Quay l was in the army cadets theTA worked for Billy Taylor as a butcher boy then on to Palmers shipyard to serve my time l had my first pint at the Caledonian pub,used to play snooker at the Kip in Lyon st danced at the Andrews sledged down Hood st,l have got to mention the pit yard as kids we were always in there it was our play ground,l get up to Hebburn a few times a year to see my siblings l can not believe what they have done to it,all those houses gone what's left from those good old days 2pubs Cally and the old Albert pub l think they call it Wardles,3 or 4 churches and lots of new houses an flats and folk from all over the place there is no character at all my recent visit going along Argyle st midday,not a soul in sight all that was missing was from what we used to see in Western pictures was direlect town with tumble weeds blown down the street to nowhere.
