As usual I've added some locations to help younger folk understand what they are looking at, because the Heap is gone, & all that land is now covered with housing, streets & road.
We moved from Lyon St to 'C' the Winderemere Cres Estate in 1953 just a few years after the photo was taken.
The Slag Heap was created when molten slag from the Jarrow Palmers Blast Furnaces was taken away on special railway wagons and dumped on the Jarrow-Hebburn border over many many years.
