This bombing in 1941 was when 50 German bombers attacked Tyneside.One target was the Tyne Bridge & they mistook the River Drive arched concrete bridge for the Tyne Bridge. They missed it completely and hit the Market Place where there was an Air Raid Shelter. Many people were killed in Shields & over 100 seriously injured. Other towns like Jarrow, Hebburn, North Shields, Whitley Bay, & Sunderland were bombed that same night.
