Having been given free access to the church in 2016, I researched and measured a lot.. It was designed by a 26yrs old Charles Walker from Newcastle in 1886 and opened in 1888. The altar, rails etc were made by John Gallagher of Newcastle and all grade ll listed. The pews were alleged to have been supplied by George Clarke a timber importer from Hartlepool. The timber is Northern pitch pine and it took 39 trees to make the 39 pews. (1 tree 1 pew) The varnish is actually shellac made from lacca lacca beetles found in India and distilled in turpentine in Germany.(30,000 to make 1/4 lb tin). The churh stands on a triangular plot once owned by the Ellison family, built by Jarrow builder Thomas Lumsden. I worked out that the corbell sited roof Wight 13 tons using Welsh slate. The entire building cost £5000 so the proposed bell tower was missed off. Finally, Walker's original plan was lost but I did manage to find it in the vestry! An interesting church with 10,968 single cuts of stained glass by Reed Millican of Newcastle....
