Here in the US it’s Election Day and all the reports are saying that it is going to be a neck and neck contest between the two candidates for President.

It absolutely floors me that half of the country seems to think that an authoritarian government would be better for them. That they are willing to vote for a man who has shown open disregard for the country’s constitution, who refuses to accept election results unless he wins, who instigated the January 6 coup attempt in 2021, who has said he will use military force against the American people, has spoken openly of punishing his political enemies if elected, and on and on.

It worries me what kind of country we might become because where America goes, the rest of the world tends to follow. We have already seen the rise of extreme right wing politics around the world. Mark Twain said that history doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes, and I worry that less than 100 years after world war 2 we are starting to see it rhyme again.
