The Blast Furnaces made steel from Iron Ore & the waste slag that got skimmed off went into special trucks and taken to the Jarrow-Hebburn border where it was dumped, eventually making our massive slag heap. My mam was born in 1922 and she said when they dumped it at night it lit up the night sky as it was still molten.
