Not so. There were two at JGS when I was there late 50's and demolished in the early sixties when a large school extension was built.
It was interesting to see this letter to the Torygraph
At the beginning of the Second World War, the forward-thinking caretaker of Jarrow Grammar School in Co Durham filled two very large bunkers with coke to be used for central heating.
Toward the end of the war, our new French teacher, Jerry Wright, recognised the bunkers were, in fact, fives courts (Letters, November 20). He had the remnants of coke removed, managed to get basic equipment, and introduced us to the game, which proved a good start to playing squash. It was tough on your hand, however, despite the glove.
Thank you, Mr Wright.
Jack Futers,
Gateshead, Co Durham
Good old Ged. He told us what they were in '55 even though my recollection is that we used them for smoking and parking bikes!!
Also does anyone recall Jack Futers. I like the fact that he still refers to our real County!!
