You didn’t have much choice about being selected to take part in the opera. You were pushed. By the teachers and your parents to be part of it.

Thank goodness I was a lousy singer but was foolish enough to have a violin so into the orchestra, hated it.
The great advantage of the opera was making the screens etc. for it but I never did as far as I can remember.
That the Operas were selected was that a large number of the lads were required. No idea of the number required but probably 50 with reserves and behind the scenes.
They learned to work together, all ages.
That probably was the point of the whole thing. With hindsight I can see what they tried to achieve.
Thank goodness I was on the fringes and conned my way through it.
By not being too much involved in the Opera could get on with other things on Day 6 which was activity day. No schooling that day, metalwork, woodwork, chess, art clubs, sports and other thing’s.
