A village inside a town
The town where Bede resided
Of ancient high renown
In a church served by a river
Where Christianity flowered
Long before the shipyard cranes
Raised there necks and towered
Back to back,cobbled streets
With back lanes,mean and narrow
Crowded poor communities
Housed the beating heart of Jarrow
A town that thrived
On steel and coal
That when no longer needed
Was thrown upon the dole
The yards are long deserted
Great ships launched no more
Mines closed and abandoned
Along that Tyneside shore
The throb and clang of industry
Is now no longer heard
St, Bedes greatest legacy
Was,and is,The Word
Saint Bede died in Jarrow 26/5/735
