Horse drawn tram and Sea Water Baths

Horse drawn tram at Pier Parade, South Shields circa 1890's. Behind you can see the Sea Water Baths. Opened by a private company in July 1885. Designed by Joseph Morton. Cost £6.000. The baths were supplied directly from the sea at high tide. 16 months later the baths were sold for £2,710. The new owners were wound up in 1902. The baths closed around 1916. In 1921 the building became the Marina Theatre, then the Majestic Ballroom with a new 1930s frontage, then an amusement arcade. Second photo shows inside of the baths in the early 1900's. And the third photo as the Majestic Ballroom in the 1950's.
