Up to 1908 it was used by the Royal Engineers and then the Royal Artillery.
My Grandfather Allan A C Campbell was in the Royal Engineers 1904 to 1908.
He was at Camp with them at Strensall at various times.
I think her left the RE after getting an illness possibly TB. I know that he did have TE at one time but not detailed info.
Here are a few Photos from Postcards that he sent to his future Wife in 1907.
They had met at Brancepeth Castle. He at Camp with the RE and she with I assume a trip with girls and ladies from the CWS building in Pelaw.
Some of the men in the photos could well be Hebburn lads
Hope these are of interest.
As these photos/postcards are nearly 120 years old they will be rare outside of Military records.
As I have others what should I do with them, I'm thinking the Discovery Museum in Newcastle but as they are Durham Possibly the Durham Records Office.
As I mentioned the Ellison St. Drill Hall I have photos taken in 1911 of Royal Artillery lads from Hebburn (My Great Uncle John is in them) I assume that his tent mates would be friends from that drill hall. I will post them at another time and there is also a photo of on S.Shields beach probably for his 21st. His father and I assume work mates are in it so more Leslie's lads.
Regards Allan C.
