However I have remembered that my wife Ann had 2 elder sisters that worked there, theses things were never discussed, usually..
I then wondered what some members of my family did during WW2. The only one that came under the category in being unmarried and girl was my Aunt Margaret Dad’s younger sister.
She was put in the land army and I have no idea where, local of elsewhere.
However she had an old schoolmate and lifelong friend, Florence.
I Knew her and husband very well as they lived 2 doors from my Campbell Grandparents in 121 Victoria Rd. West.
Bill and Florence Tillbrook in 125.
After Aunt Margaret died I used to visit Florrie and asked about their lives. They both worked for the CWS at Tennent St.. Lyon St. and sometimes in Jarrow until WW2.
She told me that while Margaret was put in the land Army as she was well built. Florence was sent to work in an Aircraft factory building Spitfires. I don’t remember where if she ever said.
She,did say that she built wing rib No.xyz. Which I found out was to one side of the port side guns.
Each wing rib was different firstly because of the wing curvature and whatever was built into the wing. This made the amount of fabrication much harder and time consuming.
If I remember correctly the ribs she made would change as time went on. Machine guns to cannon etc. I remember finding a drawing of the wing construction. Plenty of rivets.
Many of you will remember that the CWS factory in Bill quay the cabinet works built aircraft parts and maybe whole aircraft usually Horsa Gliders or the other type.
Just thought this would be of interest. Nowt on Tele worth watching.
