In the early 1960s Shields Greyhound Stadium started hosting Speedway racing & the gravel track can be seen on the photo.
I used to go to Brough Park Speedway every Monday night to watch 'Newcastle Diamonds' who had the unbeatable Ivan Mauger the World Champion racing for them.
Speedway (Motorbikes without brakes) was getting popular then so the Promoters started Speedway off at this Shields track & also at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium.
It didnt last very long at Shields or Sunderland though.
