This 1839 sketch is of the C Pit 44 years before they started to build St Andrews's Church in 1873 just 100 yds away.
The men who dug the deep mine Shaft in 1792 were called 'Sinkers' and they had big problems with water flooding in constantly so had to line the shaft with wood (Tubbing) as they sunk down to the coal seams.
This sketch was sent to me yesterday by Wallsend History Society Archivist John Myers after I'd asked what street was it with Esso Northumbria at the end of the street. He said it was long gone Leslie St. I told him that it was named that because Mr Leslie chose to live in that vicinity so he could watch over to his new Shipyard in Hebburn.
