Here's some interesting facts. The reason people were buried in churches is because they thought they would be nearer to God and first into heaven on the day of judgement. Lytch gates were introduced in the days when the clergy had to walk miles to the church to conduct a funeral and if it rained, the people needed shelter so lytch gates were made.
