My mother (born 1918) had special "soft" shoes given to her (I'm not aware of by whom) but she mentioned that they had a series of holes (perhaps three) punched into the side of them. This was to indicate to the pawn-broker that they were NOT to be accepted for Pawn. If shoes with these holes were found in his shop, he was liable to be fined! What a different world they lived in.
