Ive said this before but still worth repeating.
One of the Luftwaffe's missions that night was to bomb the Tyne Bridge. When they saw the Arch shaped bridge on River Drive at Shields, they thought it was the Tyne Bridge so dropped their bombs.
They missed the bridge & hit the Market Place & surrounding area causing many many deaths & hundreds of injuries.
