I am not sure which direction we are looking at on the photo
BUT if it is west towards Jarrow, Catherine Cookson was born in Leam Lane on the left just yards through that last arch. The road was called the 'Wrekendyke' and ran from Arebeia a Roman Fort in Shields up to White Mare Pool then it continued on the right of what is now Heworth Golf Course & then on up the bank to Wrekenton.
The road at White Mare Pool was bogland (hence Mere) so the Romans felled lots of trees, layed them out and built the road ontop. That stretch of road was then a bit higher than the surrounds and it can still be seen today.
