Nice photo Norman. The keep was built in 1172, designed by a Frenchman named Mmaurice and built for Henry II. He never visited the keep. The battlements were a later addition by John Dobson. The Black Gate is named after Patrick Black and built in 1247. Hostory has ot that it once housed 67 families. Both buildings are well worth a visit. However, it is a bit more than the tanner (6d) I used to pay in 1957!
