This photo dates from around 1870 and shows the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade during training exercise on the north side of the pier, with the old Tyne Improvement Commission yard to the right in the background beyond the Board Of Trade wagon. On the left, although not terribly clear, is a training mast, with two figures visible at the top.
